Scientists criticize raw meat trend for pets

The trend for feeding dogs and cats raw meat has been criticised by scientists, who say it often contains bacteria and parasites that could pose dangers to both pets and their owners.

A growing trend has seen pet owners plump for products such as meat, bones and organs which can be bought frozen and then thawed before being fed to dogs and cats.

Among the ideas fuelling the movement is that these diets are more “natural” for pets, avoid problems of additives or contamination in processed food, and can help to tackle issues like skin problems and allergies.

I disagree. Raw diets are natural for dogs and cats. Overprocessed, overcooked kibble is not. You have to make sure to do it correctly, of course. Also a plus is you can use meat that humans were going to toss anyway. So fewer or no animals killed just to feed your pet.

Well, just because a type of food is considered "natural" (whatever that means!) surely that doesn't necessarily make it the most healthy option? Surely it's beneficial for any animal to avoid parasites and pathogenic bacteria, regardless of how "natural" they may be? But yes, I'm sure other types of pet foods come with their own sets of problems.
